Thundering Buffalo slot review
Slots developers, IGT, who have been providing top-quality video slots consistently for years. The brains behind top quality offerings such as the ancient Egyptian themed slot, Cleopatra, and the movie-themed Ghostbusters have added to its arsenal a Native American-themed slot called Thundering Buffalo.
Hexagonal Reel set
Employing a similar dazzling 5-reel hexagonal system, the game pays 720 ways, and also pays right to left as well as left to right. The betting options are kept low, probably to encourage the casual slots fans, but with potential big wins, it’s no surprise they keep coming back for more.
As with WMS’s hairy-beast themed slot, Buffalo Spirit, Thundering Buffalo sees you on the open plain facing a herd of rather aggravated looking beasts. Fearsome they may be, but the 3D animation and graphics are something to behold: line up buffalo symbols and see them start to charge towards you. Elsewhere making up the look and feel are night-time fires, wigwams, a range of hairy critters, and the familiar 10-through-Ace card symbols.

Free spins are a big feature of the game: get five in order across the reels and you’ll trigger the Free Spins bonus, which can also be re-triggered. Even at the lower end of betting, $0.01, the freebies can add up to some big wins.
Buffalo Wilds
The ‘WILD’ symbol is, helpfully, the game’s Wild, and is stacked. It substitutes all other symbols other than the Scattered bonfire or Free Spins symbol. Line up five and an incredible animated buffalo leaps out of the screen to give you a healthy win (and, presumably, a rather large headache). Wilds obviously play a big part of all slots, but with IGT’s 720-ways method, you’ll find that angry heffalump charging out a lot more than you bargained for.
There’s a reason IGT’s unique feature has been popular all over the world: it’s a thrill and potentially can increase your wins, even starting from humble beginnings. Add that to some great animation and IGT can continue releasing MultiWay Xtra slots for some time with a pretty reasonable expectation of success down the line.

One look at the Thundering Buffalo slot on the land casino floor and we were instantly thinking that it reminded us of arguably the most popular slot game of all time – Aristocrat’s Buffalo. Now that High 5 Games have taken the slot they developed with IGT and released online, our opinion has changed somewhat, although not in terms of the theme. Sure, the game may feature a different type of big plains mammal, but it’s only the colour. Gameplay wise on the other hand, the two games are chalk and cheese.
The Thundering Buffalo slot is also different to most of the other joint ventures between H5G and IGT. It shares its game engine with very few slots in the range, unlike others which have been cloned many times. Like both Fire Horse and The Enchantment before it, this game aims to reach a different kind of player, the ones in love with the modern all ways pay formats and big free spins games of the most modern video slots.
Players who’ve followed games from this partnership over the years might at first be put off by the Thundering Buffalo slot, fearing a complicated setup on the new 720 ways to win screen with its crazy 34543-reel layout. Fear not, this plains buffalo is a gentle creature at heart and the game is actually easier to follow than many of the traditional pay-line games on offer.Wins in a 720 ways to win slot form from left to right or vice versa on the reels – they don’t have to be in set positions as with a pay-line game. This means that your slot gaming strategy boils down to just one factor – bet size. The minimum stake is 0.50 credits with a 1x multiplier. You can adjust this up to a whopping 500.00 credits for the maximum x1000 multiplier of the credit wins available on the push button pay-table. Whilst the variance is a little higher than average for these games the RTP is still fixed no matter what stake size and multiplier you choose.
The rest of the controls are all the same as any other game. Quick spin by clicking twice, manually play each round or set 5-25 automatic spins as your bankroll suits. The display changes a little for mobile players to ease playability on your phone but the actual game is still exactly the same.
The great vista of the Rocky Mountains forms the reel backdrop to the Thundering Buffalo Slot. With grasslands and a calm river below the reels and blood red sunset lit peaks above. The strange reel structure itself is framed with Indian style totem poles and a tan background that looks disconcertingly like dried buffalo hide, clearly players have been hunting for more than just slot wins.
As mentioned earlier the Buffalo on the Thundering Buffalo Slot isn’t the big brown shaggy beast of the Aristocrat game. Instead, it’s a mystic white mammoth which thunders out of the reels as if you are in a dream state. Somewhat fittingly the other two bespoke symbols are an Indian dream catcher and a tepee, no doubt smoking of some dream inducing substances has been going on inside. Sadly this is where the theme falls down, with a style far too similar to one of the best slots ever and just three bespoke symbols in its arsenal not even the cute animations and sound effects really make it comparable.
The wins on the slot, similar to the theme, can feel a little lacklustre, although that’s compensated for later on in the feature. The base game can pay big but usually, you need to be on a big bet with multiple combinations or catching 5-of-a-kinds to really feel rewarded. There is a wild symbol which is important on an all ways pay game but, it’s fixed rather than expanding and carries no credit award of its own.
